I’ve had the pleasure of working with Ricë for several years now, so when she asked if I would contribute to this brand new and fabulous community, I couldn’t help but exclaim, “Yes!” With such talented women at the helm, I knew the site would be an instant success. But before I go on, perhaps I should back up and introduce myself and explain a little about who I am and why I’ll be posting here.
I’m Christen Olivarez, Director of Publishing for Stampington & Company and Editor-in-Chief of Somerset Studio, the top-ranked magazine for mixed-media and paper artists. I consider myself to be more than an editor, though. I see myself as a champion for the artistic spirits out there. In some ways, I’m a sort-of “fairy artmother,” granting all kinds of creative wishes.
Raised by a tribe of creative women, I’ve witnessed the power of art first hand. I understood early on that sewing clothes for her children was not only my mom’s way of showing she cared, it’s what kept her sane at times. I watched with wonderment as photography pulled my older sister out of a deep depression. And I knew my aunt’s continuous sketching was her way of expressing words she could never speak. Rather than question their artistic pursuits, I supported them, and then jumped right in.
I’ve explored a number of artistic avenues, but when I began working at Stampington & Company three years ago, I discovered the world of art journaling and was forever changed. I’ve kept a diary for many years and always filled it with doodles and clippings, but when I saw the art journals that were sent to our office, I was blown away. I picked up a fresh Moleskine, some paint, and haven’t looked back since.
In my free time, I can usually be found working in my art journal or with a knitting or crochet project in my lap. Sitting still is something I have a very hard time doing, so I don’t. I also have an intense passion for food and all things food-related, and love trying out new recipes or seeking out hole-in-the-wall restaurants. I also spend a lot of time on the Internet at home, scoping out the latest and greatest artwork, both for myself and for work.
Every other week I’ll be posting about all-things Stampington. If you’ve ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at some of your favorite magazines, I’ll be showing you. From art selections to photo shoots, I’ll be giving you a peek. I’ll also talk about how to get published and share our thoughts on some up-and-coming artists and trends in mixed-media. If there’s anything you’d like to learn about our company, I invite you to send me an e-mail at [email protected]. I’ll be happy to consider suggestions for future posts.
Here’s to new artistic adventures!
